ROBERT W. LAFFIN, JR. was born in Denver, Colorado and grew up in Vermont. He graduated magna cum laude from New York University in 1978 with a B.A. in Political Science. He received his J.D. degree from New York University School of Law in 1981. He practiced securities law in New York City at the firms of Brown, Wood, Ivey, Mitchell and Petty, and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom before moving to Maine in 1984. He worked with Roy, Beardsley, Williams & Granger, LLC in Ellsworth, starting in 1991, and joined Rudman & Winchell in 2007.  His practice areas include real estate, municipal law, appellate practice and civil litigation.
