Workers’ Compensation 101
Anne-Marie Storey will again be presenting three seminars for the Fall Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce Workplace Seminar Series.
In this session, we will discuss best practices for employers to prevent and respond to workers’ compensation claims, from investigating alleged injuries to completing and filing appropriate forms. We will also address the very basic question of when does an injury “arise out of and in the course of employment”, a prerequisite for workers’ compensation.

On October 14, 2009, Anne-Marie Storey will present a workers’ compensation update at the 13th Annual Employment Law and Human Resource Conference hosted by the Northeast Society for Human Resource Management.

What’s New in Employment Law?
Anne-Marie Storey will again be presenting three seminars for the Fall Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce Workplace Seminar Series.
This session will cover new legislative changes that affect businesses of all sizes and include diverse workplace issues such as smoking, breastfeeding, and the time to file a Maine Human Rights Commission charge of discrimination. In addition, we will discuss updates from the EEOC and the current status of the union organizing legislation.

Anne-Marie Storey will co-present the plenary session at the Maine State Bar Association’s Business Law Institute on September 25, 2009. The topic is “The Cost of Business in a Tough Economy: Employment Issues in Cost Cutting and Downsizing”.
New Employment Law Legislation in Maine
On September 10, Anne-Marie Storey will present to the Human Resources Association of Eastern Maine on the topic of new employment law legislation in Maine. The seminar will take place at the Muddy Rudder Restaurant in Brewer starting at 11:30 a.m.
Workplace Issues and the Flu
On May 15, Anne-Marie Storey will present a special HR seminar for the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce on the topic of “Workplace Issues and the Flu”. The seminar will take place at the Clifton Eames Learning Center from 11 am to 12 pm. It will provide employers with practical advice about employment-related laws that can be implicated by recent (and future) flu outbreaks. Issues we will discuss include wage and hour, leave, and actual or perceived disabilities.
General Workplace Audit, including What to Keep, How Long to Keep it, and Where to Keep it?
On February 26, 2009, Anne-Marie Storey will present the first in the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce Workplace Seminar Series. This session is titled “General Workplace Audit, including What to Keep, How Long to Keep it, and Where to Keep it?” It will address general employment best practices for all employers, including the proper posters that need to be posted in all workplaces, how to properly maintain a personnel file, what needs to be in an employment handbook, what records an employer must maintain and how to properly do so, and other general employment practices. To facilitate compliance with the deadline for existing elected officials, Rudman & Winchell’s Municipal Law Team will host several free Freedom of Access Training Programs for municipal and other public officials during the month of September 2008.

Michael P. Friedman will be speaking to the New England College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine on May 15 on medical causation in litigation settings.
