Anne-Marie Storey will present a six seminar series for the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce focusing on workplace issues.  The sessions are scheduled for April 15, May 13, June 10, September 9, October 7, and November 11. Paul W. Chaiken will chair the Maine Supreme Judicial Court’s Advisory Committee on the Rules of Professional Responsibility for a three year term; this Committee oversees the rules governing the conduct of lawyers in the state.

Paul Chaiken has received the 2007 Maine Judicial Branch Advocate for Justice Award.  Maine Supreme Judicial Court Chief Justice Leigh Saufley attended the award ceremony with four Associate Justices of the Court.  In his remarks presenting the award, Associate Justice Jon Levy said Paul was being honored for his extraordinary commitment and dedication to Maine’s Task Force on Ethics 2000 .  Paul personally recruited all of the members and, since March 2005, served as its Chair.  The Task Force was convened to study the American Bar Association’s revised Model Code of Professional Responsibility relative to the existing Maine Code of Professional Responsibility.   The Task Force has recommended a new code of professional responsibility be adopted in Maine.  Once the recommendations are approved by the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, the Maine Code of Professional Conduct will govern lawyers’ relationships with their clients, the public, one another, and the courts throughout the 21st century.  Justice Levy concluded by noting that “Without Paul’s talents and his extraordinary commitment to professional ethics and the cause of justice, this major development would not have been possible.”

The Maine Supreme Judicial Court has designated Paul H. Sighinolfi, Esq. of Bangor to serve as Chair of the Board of Overseers of the Bar.

On October 1, Anne-Marie Storey will co-present a seminar at the Northern New England Law Publishers Workers' Compensation Summit.

On September 13, Anne-Marie Storey will present a seminar for the Human Resources Association of Eastern Maine on the topic of new legislation affecting Maine employers.

Bruce Mallonee has received the 2007 Lew Vafiades Pro Bono Award from The Maine Volunteer Lawyers Project and the Maine Bar Foundation.  Bruce is being honored for his extraordinary work on behalf of the Maine Volunteer Lawyers Project.

Paul Chaiken attended the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws Annual Meeting in Pasadena, California from July 27 to August 3, 2007.  The National Conference consists of lawyers, judges, and law professors from each of the 50 states; Washington, D.C.; Puerto Rico; and the American Virgin Islands.  Now known as the Uniform Law Conference, it has, for the past 115 years, met annually to draft and adopt laws to prompt uniformity in state law on all subjects where uniformity is desirable and practical.  This year the Commission approved uniform rules relating to electronically stored information; an act regarding interstate depositions and discovery in civil cases; the Uniform Limited Cooperative Association Act; and the Uniform Adult Guardianship and Protective Proceedings Jurisdiction Act.  These and other adopted Acts and Rules are now ready for enactment by various state legislatures.  More information on the Uniform Law Commission can be found at www.nccusl.org.

On July 25, Anne-Marie Storey was a speaker at a National Business Institute seminar in Portland on the topic of the interplay between the Maine Human Rights Act, the Americans With Disabilities Act, the Family Medical Leave Acts, and the Maine Workers' Compensation Act.

In April of 2007, the Chief Justice of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court appointed Paul Chaiken to the Civil Legal Services Fund Commission. The Civil Legal Services Fund Commission was established by an act of the Legislature, to provide funding to support the provision of free legal services to low income people or needy elderly people in Maine. Paul serves with two other commissioners who also were appointed by the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. The Commission distributes funds from surcharges on filings in Maine courts. It has established selection criteria for awarding grants to eligible entities.

In February of 2005, Paul Chaiken was asked to lead the Maine Task Force on Ethics 2000. This group was assembled to re-write Maine's bar rules, the ethical and disciplinary rules for lawyers. At the time, Maine was one of only eight states that did not base its ethical rules on the American Bar Association Model Rules of Professional Conduct. The Maine Task Force on Ethics met for 2 1/2 years. It presented its report and recommendations to the Maine Supreme Judicial Court in July of 2007. Because of his activity, Paul was asked to make presentations at the Bar Associations from Hancock County, Knox County, Androscoggin County, Penobscot County, and Cumberland County. He also presided over a public forum on the proposed rules at the Annual Meeting of the Maine State Bar Association.

Paul W. Chaiken was the guest speaker at the Greater Bangor Apartment Owners and Managers Association March meeting.  GMAOMA asked him to address liability, insurance and litigation issues.  The topics drew twice the expected number of members to dinner meeting.

Anne-Marie Storey is a contributing editor to the 2006 Supplement of a treatise published by the American Bar Association titled "Age Discrimination in Employment Law".

On September 28, Anne-Marie Storey will be the presenter at a Workplace Seminar Series presented by the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce. The topic is “Ten Common Employment-Related Mistakes Made by Employers”.

On September 19, Anne-Marie Storey spoke at the Northern New England Law Publisher’s Comp Summit on the topic of legal issues raised by a flu pandemic in the workplace.

Brent Singer successfully argued an appeal in the Maine Supreme Court on behalf of Penobscot County in City of Bangor v. Penobscot County, 2005 ME 35. The Court ruled in favor of Penobscot County and other similarly situated counties that they may continue to fund regional emergency dispatch centers with county taxes even if some municipalities elect not to participate in the centers.

February 9-11, 2005, Brent Singer attended a three-day advanced pension law conference in Orlando, Florida. Topics included what's new in 403(b) and 457 plans, health savings accounts, fiduciary liability and directed investments, and the new DOL automatic rollover regulations.

Brent Singer attended a national seminar in January 2004 on Securities Laws for Non-securities Lawyers. The seminar was designed for general corporate counsel who must also be able to give some guidance to new and growing corporate clients looking to attract capital by private placement or an eventual public offering.

Brent Singer will participate as the lawyer panelist in a half-day workshop on "The Core Responsibilities of Nonprofit Boards," on March 25, 2004, in Bangor. The workshop is designed to give prospective and current board members an overview of nonprofit board service and it will explore, among other things, the key legal roles and responsibilities of nonprofit board members.

Timothy A. Pease joined attorneys from Portland law firms of Berstein Shur and Murray, Plumb, and Murray to present on July 15, 2003, a seminar for the National Business Institute on "School Law Issues in Maine." Tim, whose practice includes a focus on school and education law, and who is a former assistant school board attorney for the Miami-Dade County Public Schools in Miami, Florida, spoke on the legal issues associated with school attendance, search and seizure in schools, ethics in discipline and dismissal, and the the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.

In September 2003 Anne-Marie L. Storey presented for the Council on Education in Management a seminar titled "Avoiding New and Treacherous Legal Risks in Hiring Employees: Implementing Careful Background Checks and Other Practices to Ensure a Secure and Profitable Workplace."

Frank T. McGuire, head of Rudman & Winchell's employment and labor practice section, has been selected to join the Substance Abuse in the Workplace Workgroup. The Workgroup, sponsored by Maine's Office of Substance Abuse, makes recommendations to the Maine Legislature regarding modifications and additions to Maine law and workers to develop incentive programs and mechanisms to encourage safe working environments.

Anthony D. Pellegrini, a registered patent attorney, coordinated Rudman & Winchell's presentation as an exhibitor at the MaineTech 2003 trade show, a gathering of innovative Maine companies held May 2003 at the Augusta Civic Center.

Brent Singer was recently elected President of the Board of Directors of the Housing Foundation. The Housing Foundation was formed in 1971 and has developed and now manages over 320 units of affordable housing and related support services for families, seniors, and disabled adults in eight locations in several different towns.

Ms. McCarthy practices with Rudman & Winchell's Transactions Section, focusing on immigration law and estate planning. She is a graduate of the University of Colorado and the University of Illinois, where she earned degrees in mathematics, and a 1995 summa cum laude graduate of the University of Maine School of Law, where she was Editor-in-Chief of the Maine Law Review. Before joining Rudman & Winchell, Ms. McCarthy clerked for Justice Paul L. Rudman of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. Ms. McCarthy is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and serves, by appointment of the Governor, on the Maine Board of Bar Examiners.

Ms. Storey is a member of Rudman & Winchell's Employment and Litigation Sections, where her practice focuses on all aspects of employment law. She is a frequent speaker to human resource professionals on employment related topics, and she often contributes articles to The Employers' Quarterly and Maine Business & Employment Law. Ms. Storey earned her undergraduate degree from Middlebury College in 1989, after which she served as a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer in Thailand. She graduated cum laude from Vermont Law School in 1995, where she was a Notes Editor of the Vermont Law Review. Ms. Storey serves on the Maine State Bar Association Continuing Legal Education Committee and is a member of the John Waldo Ballou Inn of Court.

Rudman & Winchell partner Robert E. ("Buddy") Murray, Jr. has been appointed by Governor John E. Baldacci to serve in the new Governor's cabinet as Commissioner of the Maine Department of Professional and Financial Regulation. The appointment has been confirmed by the Maine Senate. Mr. Murray has responsibility for more than 40 State professional and occupational licensing boards, including the Bureau of Insurance, the Bureau of Financial Institutions, the Office of Securities, and the Office of Consumer Credit Regulation.

Paul W. Chaiken recently was appointed by the Maine Supreme Judicial Court to serve on the Advisory Committee to the Court on the Maine Rules of Professional Responsibility. From 1994-98, Paul chaired the Court’s Advisory Committee on the Maine Rules of Evidence.

Bruce C. Mallonee has been appointed a Director of the Pierre Monteux Foundation, which oversees the internationally renowned Pierre Monteux School of Conducting in Hancock, Maine.

Paul H. Sighinolfi has been appointed by the Overseers of the Maine Bar and approved by the Maine Supreme Judicial Court to chair a panel of the Bar Grievance Commission. The Commission is made up of attorneys and lay persons and handles formal complaints filed against members of the Maine bar.

Ed Bearor was recently selected to serve as co-chair of the Maine State Bar Association Municipal Law Section.

George F. Eaton was recently elected for a three-year term to the Superintending School Committee for the City of Bangor. He has also been elected to the Executive Committee of the Business Law Section of the Maine State Bar Association.

Anne-Marie L. Storey was recently confirmed as a new member of the Maine State Bar Association's Continuing Legal Education Committee.

Paul W. Chaiken has been appointed to a five-year term as Commissioner for the Bangor Housing Authority, by the Bangor City Council. It will be Paul's second term. A recent audit of the Housing Authority declared it one of the most efficient and profitable housing authorities in the State of Maine.

Leigh McCarthy recently was appointed by Maine Governor Angus King to a five-year term on the Maine Board of Bar Examiners.
